A Word About Wood

The pictures showing our products are representative examples of what to expect when purchasing our products.
At Smith’s Fine Wood Products we use “real” wood. Because of this no two similar products will look exactly the same.

Wood absorbs stain differently thus changing the coloration slightly from piece to piece. Also, sap lines, growth rings, and other characteristics of wood alter the appearance from board to board. Many of our products are formed from several pieces to maintain stability and add to the unique appearance of our products. This also will show as grain changes or “character” from board to board.
We do not use computer operated machinery, laser guided shapers, or other “factory” type production methods so there may be minimal differences between pieces that are said to be the same. All products do, however, maintain the high quality of individually produced products.

Solid woods have a natural beauty but they must be treated differently than plywoods or pressed wood products. It is best to protect wood from bumps and scratches whenever possible. Also, real wood is porous and it breathes as the temperature and moisture content of the air changes. Try to avoid either very damp or very dry storage areas. Also avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat which can cause warping. If warping does occur it can often be corrected by moving the wood product to a less dry area where the wood can absorb moisture.
Properly cared for, your wood product should give a lifetime of satisfaction. For most wood objects an occasional cleaning with pure lemon oil (just a couple of drops) will enhance and protect the beauty of the wood.

Smith’s Fine Wood Products uses lumber species common to the northern Pennsylvania and southern New York state regions. We do not use imported or exotic woods because local forests produce some of the finest lumber available and we prefer working with local mills.
Most of our products are constructed using kiln dried Red Oak but we also carry supplies of Cherry, Black Walnut, Ash, and Tiger Maple. Any of our products can be built using any of these species but delivery time has to be extended to allow for construction of the custom product. Pricing of these items will also be slightly higher than the production run items due to machine setup and finishing of single pieces. If you don’t mind a week or two delay in receiving an item, you can have it made from your “wood of choice”.
