Several of our products use Figured Maple either as the primary wood or as an enhancement to other woods. Figured Maple can be Tiger Maple, Curly Maple, Birds-eye Maple, or combinations of more than one type in the same board.
As the figure in the wood becomes more extreme it becomes much more beautiful to the eye, but it is also more difficult to work with because the curving grain makes it difficult to maintain a smooth edge. This can cause slight imperfections in the tightness of the corner and edge joints.
Our Local Maples can be either hard or soft maple. Both can have attractive grain patterns but often the Hard Maple will be highly figured. On the down side, Hard Maple is also the tree that produces Maple Syrup sap which means the sugary based wood can attract insects that also like the sugar. It will not be uncommon to find minor insect damage in Maple Wood pieces. This is normally only a small circle that looks much like a nail hole. Sometimes the wood can be much more damaged, which can be attractive on its own, but we will indicate this feature in any of our products where its use is intentional.
